Privacy Policy

What we do not collect

We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number or any account information. Posting requires no registration. The one exception is donating: see Payments below.

What we do store

  • The content and timestamp of what you post — the body of your posts and comments, the category you chose, and the date and time. This is the service itself; it is retained until you withdraw the post.
  • An anonymous identifier stored in your browser as a cookie, used to show you your own posts and to prevent abuse.
  • A language preference cookie, used to remember whether you read this site in Japanese or English.
  • Your IP address at the time of posting, retained for approximately 12 months and then deleted. It is used to prevent abuse and to meet the requirements of Japanese law regarding sender information disclosure. It is never shown to other users.
  • Access statistics, collected in aggregate and not tied to individuals.

What stays on your device

Drafts, mute settings and your agreement to our promise are stored only in your browser's local storage, not on our servers.

How we use this information

  • To provide the service — showing posts, preventing duplicate empathy, and limiting rapid repeat posting.
  • To keep the place safe — preventing spam and abuse, and responding to reports.
  • To meet obligations under applicable law, such as requests for disclosure of sender information.
  • To improve the service, by understanding anonymous usage patterns.

Disclosure to third parties

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with third parties other than the infrastructure providers described in the next section and the payment processor described under Payments. We may disclose sender information where disclosure is required by law or by a lawful request from a court, the police or another public authority.

Infrastructure providers

This service is hosted on Vercel and uses Supabase for its database, so posted data is stored on their servers. Both apply industry-standard security measures.

Payments

The following applies only if you choose to make a donation. Donating is not a condition of using honne, and no feature changes depending on whether you donate.

  • Payment is handled on an external page provided by Stripe, Inc. (and Stripe Japan Inc.). Card numbers, expiry dates and security codes go directly to Stripe; they never pass through or get stored on honne's servers.
  • Stripe receives your email address, payment method details, the amount and your IP address. Stripe's handling of that information follows Stripe's own privacy policy, and receipts are sent by Stripe.
  • The operator learns only that a payment was made and its amount. We never obtain your card details.
  • We do not link donation records to your anonymous identifier or to your posts. The operator cannot tell who has donated.
  • Because a donation is a gift, we are generally unable to offer refunds. If something went wrong, please get in touch.

Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy as needed. If a change is significant, we will say so on this page.

Contact

You can reach us anonymously through the contact form (the form is in Japanese). Writing to us in English is fine; the reply may use machine translation.
